Why Pallet Shipping Is Different

Package shipping (FedEx Ground, UPS, USPS) handles individual boxes under 150 pounds with relatively predictable pricing per pound. Pallet shipping is a completely different system — Less-Than-Truckload (LTL) freight — that prices based on weight class, density, distance, and delivery type.

The two systems don’t compare. A 200-pound package via FedEx might run $80; a 200-pound pallet via LTL might run $200–$400 to the same destination. The math is different because pallets ride on freight trucks alongside commercial cargo, with multiple transfer points and specialized handling.

Understanding LTL pricing isn’t optional — it’s the difference between a profitable pallet and a break-even pallet.

How LTL Freight Pricing Works

LTL pricing has five main factors:

1. Weight class: NMFC classifications based on density. Common ranges 50–125. Higher class = more expensive per pound.
2. Total weight: pallets typically weigh 200–800 pounds.
3. Origin and destination ZIPs: longer distances cost more.
4. Service type: standard commercial, residential, liftgate, white-glove.
5. Fuel surcharges and accessorials: variable fees added to base rate.

Most pallets ship at NMFC class 70–85 (general merchandise). Lower-density items (apparel, plush toys) classify higher (100–125) because they take more space per pound.

Base Shipping Cost Estimates

Reasonable 2026 estimates for a 400-pound pallet:

• Same metro area (under 100 miles): $100–$180
• Regional (100–500 miles): $150–$280
• Adjacent regions (500–1,200 miles): $200–$400
• Cross-country (1,200+ miles): $300–$550
• Alaska, Hawaii, or Puerto Rico: $800–$2,000+

Each delivery service upgrade adds to the base:

• Liftgate service: +$75–$125 (typically required for residential)
• Residential delivery: +$75–$120
• Delivery appointment: +$25–$50
• White-glove (inside delivery): +$150–$300
• Limited access (apartment, gated, schools): +$50–$100

A typical residential delivery with liftgate runs base rate + $150–$240 in upgrades.

Commercial vs Residential

Commercial addresses (warehouses, businesses with a dock or forklift) get standard rates and no liftgate requirement. Residential addresses (houses, apartments) require both residential service and liftgate. The cost gap is significant — sometimes $200+ for the same physical distance.

Resellers who run their business from a commercial address (even a small storage unit with dock access) save meaningfully on shipping over time. By your 10th pallet, the savings often offset the storage unit rent.

Calculating Total Pallet Cost

Always include shipping when calculating your true pallet cost:

True pallet cost = pallet price + freight base + delivery upgrades + fuel surcharge

A “$500 pallet” with $350 in shipping is an $850 investment. Profit math against $850, not $500.

Many beginners make the mistake of evaluating pallet profitability against the listed pallet price. The freight cost gets buried in mental accounting. Track it explicitly.

How to Save on Shipping

1. Choose pallets from the closest warehouse when given a choice — most resellers ship from multiple locations.
2. Use commercial-only delivery if you can — rent a small commercial space or arrange dock-and-forklift pickup at a nearby business.
3. Pick up at the warehouse if you’re within driving distance. Saves $200+ per pallet.
4. Combine orders — multiple pallets to one address ship cheaper per pallet.
5. Avoid residential during peak seasons — surcharges spike in November–December.
6. Skip delivery appointments if you can be flexible — appointment surcharges add up.
